The beginning

Looking to get into witchcraft? Well let me give you some tips on where to start. First off I would do a little research on what path you want to choose. Do you wish to be Wiccan, or Pagan, etc. There is a bit of a list of types of paths to take. Now for me I am an eclectic witch. Which basically means I follow some older practices but I also do everything. From using herbs to candles to crystals. Some people choose only crystals or herbs. Not me I love it all. Also the aesthetic of witchcraft is so pretty, anyways I am getting off topic. Where to start, well after knowing your path you need to find a good book. For me I started with, "Buckland's Complete Book of Witchcraft". Its a big blue book with a load of information. I fell in love with it. Also when finding your first book or so I recommend starting with the history of witchcraft. Preferably from the perspective of a witch. Some books are from the perspective of a christian and it can be a bias view. I still encourage you read those books but I wouldn't start out with them. After you learn a bit of history the basics is a good next step. Start by establishing your space, where do you wish to practice, how do you wish to practice. In Wicca you cast a circle, in others you face a specific direction. For me I just place my altar where it feels comfortable. This is all ok its up to you. Also don't be overwhelmed by the tools and things you might need to cast spells in the future. These are best gathered over time. Things can be very expensive but not everything is. For example I got a lot of my tools like my athame (knife) and staff from people who were throwing them away. Now if you do not know people to randomly acquire items from you can also check out thrift stores, flee markets, and garage sales. I can't tell you how many cool items I have found. Crystals are expensive, candles can be expensive, but with these I would look for deals and things. I got a lot of candles second hand still in the packaging. They were old but never burned so I took them and they lasted me ages. Also goodwills tend to have unburned candles in good condition. Or simples places like dollar general sells candles. They don't have to have a super witchy aesthetic they just have to work for what you need. Basically shop smart and if you have the means buy at a whim its up to you. Another cool thing you can do to gather supplies is buy witchy boxes online. They come with loads of things like herbs and crystals and sometimes books. Don't be afraid to make some things either. Hand crafted can be sometimes be better. At the end of the day the best place to start is research and to remind yourself to gather slowly there is no rush.

  2. Welcome and Many Blessings on your newest adventure! "Buckland's" was one of my first entryway books as well - good choice. I have also quite enjoyed pretty much anything written by Lexa Rosean, Caroline W. Casey, or Ted Andrews.. I look forward to seeing more from you. All the best!
